The 98th Academy Awards are finally here! This year's ceremony is hosted by Conan O'Brien, who also hosted last year at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Sinners leads the nominations with a record-breaking 16 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. The show can be seen live on ABC and CTV tonight, Sunday, March 15, 2026.
Some of Conan's best bits during his monologue included mocking Timothée Chalamet who earlier dissed ballet and opera, saying "no one cares about" those forms of art anymore. Conan also quipped, "In Hamnet, Shakespeare’s wife gives birth by herself in the woods. Or what we call in America: Affordable health care" and "This year we added a new category, best casting. Which means tonight, one casting director won an Oscar and for the rest of you, we decided to go in another direction."
Amy Madigan won the first award handed out -- Best Supporting Actress -- for her role in Weapons, in which she gave an incredible performance. The next award, for Animated Feature Film, went to KPop Demon Hunters, which also won for Best Song. Frankenstein won two craft awards for Makeup and Hairstyling and Costume Design. Canada made an appearance amongst the winners with the National Film Board of Canada's wonderful short film, The Girl Who Cried Pearls.
Sean Penn was absent when his name was called out as the winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in One Battle After Another, so last year's Best Supporting Actor winner, Kieran Culkin, accepted it on his behalf. Paul Thomas Anderson was awarded the Best Director Oscar for the film, which also won the big award of the night -- Best Picture.
The film Sentimental Value starring Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning, which was also up for Best Picture, won in the International Feature Film category.
Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for Hamnet, while Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for Sinners.
Touching tributes were paid to Rob Reiner, Diane Keaton, Catherine O'Hara and Robert Redford, by Billy Crystal, Rachel McAdams and Barbra Streisand. ~Alexandra Heilbron

I'm glad Sean Penn wasn't there. That guy looks like the ghost of Keith Richards' corpse. Don't smoke tobacco, kids.
