Chuck Norris in The Expendables 2Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its toughest and most beloved stars: Chuck Norris died suddenly at 86 yesterday (Thursday, March 19, 2026) from a medical emergency, leaving behind a legacy of box office hits and internet legend status.

Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940 in Ryan, Oklahoma, the future action hero came from humble beginnings and a turbulent home life before finding structure in the U.S. Air Force and, soon after, in martial arts. He went on to dominate the competitive karate circuit, opening schools, winning titles and building the calm, steely persona that would later define his big-screen career.

Norris made his early mark in film opposite Bruce Lee in 1972’s The Way of the Dragon, delivering a now-iconic Colosseum showdown that cemented both men as martial arts legends. By the '80s, he was headlining his own franchises, including Missing in Action, Code of Silence and The Delta Force, playing stoic, no-nonsense heroes who fought impossible odds and almost always walked away without a scratch.

In 1993, Norris made the leap to small-screen superstardom with Walker, Texas Ranger, the CBS drama that ran for eight seasons and turned him into a household name for families as well as action fans. As Cordell Walker, he balanced high-kick justice with moral lessons, making the show a syndication staple around the world and inspiring generations who grew up watching him.

More recently, he starred on the big screen in The Expendables 2 (2012), alongside other action stars such as Sylvester StalloneJason Statham, Jet Li, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Long after his peak box office years, Norris found a surprising second act as a full-blown meme. "Chuck Norris facts" — wildly exaggerated jokes about his toughness, grit and mythical abilities — exploded online, transforming him into a pop-culture superhero for the digital age. Instead of shying away, he leaned into the joke, gamely appearing in commercials, talk show bits and campaigns that winked at his over-the-top reputation.

Away from the cameras, Norris was known for his Christian faith, conservative politics and extensive charity work, particularly with children’s organizations, veterans and law enforcement. He wrote multiple books, toured as a motivational speaker and spent much of his later life on his Texas ranch, prioritizing his family while still popping up for the occasional guest role, endorsement or fan event.

Chuck Norris is survived by his wife, Gena, his children and grandchildren, and millions of fans around the world who grew up watching him take on bad guys with a single, decisive kick. On screen he was the ultimate tough guy, but off screen he was a devoted family man, mentor and quiet philanthropist — a real person behind the larger-than-life legend. ~Alexandra Heilbron
