Melissa McCarthy
is not only The Boss, but a genius too.
MTV announced this morning that the Spy actress will be honored with the Comedic Genius Award at this year's Movie Awards.
Melissa is the third person to win the award, following previous winners Kevin Hart (who's co-hosting this year's awards with Dwayne Johnson) and Will Ferrell.
“Honoring Melissa McCarthy with [the award] is exciting on so many levels, it’s the first time this award is going to a woman which is fantastic,” Movie Awards executive producer Casey Patterson said in a statement. “We love Melissa for her performances but she also writes, produces and directs comedy, so this award is incredibly well deserved. The most exciting thing about Melissa is how brave she is.”
The comedienne began her career at the prestigious Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles, and up until five years ago, was best known for her role in the WB series Gilmore Girls and the CBC sitcom Mike and Molly.
In 2011, she broke out into the movie mainstream with her Oscar-nominated role in Bridesmaids, and has been on a comedic roll ever since, including starring in the upcoming all-female Ghostbusters.
The MTV Movie Awards will air on Sunday, April 10.

You're joking, right? In her movies, she plays essentially one character over and over again. At times, she's the dark version of this character, at others she's either the insane version or the light version. Frankly, there's no genius to her work at all. Genius implies innovation, thought, new perspective - traits she really doesn't have. She's getting this award because she's extremely popular right now - for reasons I don't quite understand, but then again, I don't think she's very funny (maybe I don't get the joke)- and making literally tons of money. She's feeding the industry beast. Does anyone really think, she'll be this big in five years? After, genius has staying power.
I just attended the advanced screening of The Boss & was pleasantly surprised by most of this movie & a little shocked by the street fight scene - but for the most part, I enjoyed this movie. Well done:)
She was funny in Bridesmaids. After that, not really and the new movie looks really, really bad if the trailer is anything to go by.
Great job Mellisa (I love her) - but i think TINA FEY should have received this first.. now SHE is a Comedic Genius!
There are SO many funnier women comedians than Melissa McCarthy. She always plays the same type of character that I just don't find funny, I find it sad...
I agree with most of the above comments. I don't find her a comic genius at all. The performer gets one role that gets a chuckle and they replay it over and over again. She not funny in the least to me.
I never saw Bridesmaids but I loved Spy and went 4 times to the theatre to see it, taking different people with me. I don't swear and especially hate the f-word which was in there a lot but the hilarity overcame my aversion and I laughed just as much every time I saw it. I loved "The Heat" and I am going to love "The Boss". Comics don't usually have a lot of different character types. She played a completely different non-funny character in St. Vincent which was a great movie and should have bestowed an Oscar on Bill Murray. I personally don't think Will Farrell deserved the award. There's a comic who is always the same, over the top, totally unbelievable, and really annoying. Elf is his only movie I like. Robin Williams and Jim Carey were/are much funnier.
they are probably just giving this to her because they feel sorry for her about the whole Ghostbusters debacle this is like preemptive pity.
