Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy features a star-studded cast, including Green Day, Mason Thames, Mckenna Grace, Fred Armisen, Sean Gunn and two members of The Office cast -- Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey.
The movie offers up a fun premise: three teenagers form a band called Analogue Dogs, striving to make a name for themselves. Tommy (Thames) and Fred (Kylr Coffman) are troublemakers who constantly skip school, thumb their noses at adults and basically just do what they want. The third, Chad (Ryan Foust), is a nerdy brainiac who plays drums for the band. It's unclear how he ever became friends with Tommy and Fred, because he has a goal for the future, and it's not playing in a band.
Nonetheless, they meet Green Day at a signing, where Tommy hands lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong a demo of one of their songs. Days later, Tommy can't believe his ears when Green Day's Tré Cool calls Tommy, inviting Analogue Dogs to open for them at their New Year's Eve concert in Los Angeles.
Unbeknownst to Tommy, the invitation is a prank orchestrated by his older brother Wayne (Keen Ruffalo), seeking revenge after Tommy not only didn't help him put a Santa on their roof, but removed the ladder, stranding Wayne.
When Tommy's mother (Jenna Fischer) forbids him to go, Tommy steals Wayne's old taxi cab and embarks on a road trip to Los Angeles with Fred and Chad. Along the way, they have a blast and create unforgettable memories.
Angela Kinsey delivers a hilarious performance as a Southern country bar owner, a role vastly different from her uptight character on The Office. She's perky, outgoing and kind to all, and gives the boys an opportunity to play at her bar. Jenna Fischer portrays a savvy woman who strives to be a good mom to her boys, even though they are a handful.
Fan favorite Mckenna Grace makes an appearance as a girl Tommy falls for during the road trip. This marks a reunion for Grace and Thames, who were love interests in last year's box office hit Regretting You.
Aptly directed by Lee Kirk, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Green Day, Nimrods offers a fun night out at the movies. It's packed with laughs and heartwarming moments. Green Day fans will appreciate the concert footage and fictional behind-the-scenes moments with the band. Overall, the movie provides excellent value for money and then some. ~Alexandra Heilbron
