Robert Redford, legendary actor, director, and environmental activist, has died at the age of 89. His publicist, Cindi Berger, wrote: "Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah–the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly."
Born on August 18, 1936, Redford became one of Hollywood’s most admired leading men, starring in classics such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting (for which he received an Oscar nomination), All the President’s Men, and Out of Africa. His roles defined a new kind of Hollywood leading man—charming, intelligent, and quietly rebellious. His magnetic presence, tousled blond hair, and quiet charisma captivated audiences for decades.
Throughout a career that spanned more than six decades, he became one of the most iconic figures in American film, known for his artistic vision and commitment to independent cinema.
Beyond acting, Redford achieved acclaim as a director, winning an Academy Award for Ordinary People. He continued to create thought-provoking films that explored the depths of human relationships and social issues.
In 1981, he founded the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival, transforming the landscape of American independent film and giving countless emerging filmmakers their start. In 2014, Redford said of the festival: "I didn't want to do it in New York or L.A.... I said, let's put it in Utah, let's make it hard to get to. Let's make it weird. We started Sundance as a place to come and develop new artists, with the ambition of creating a community and giving them a platform for their work. I don't think our mission has changed at all."
Redford moved to Utah in 1961 with his wife, Lola Van Wagenen, and his daughter, Shauna. A son, David, was born in 1962, and daughter Amy followed in 1970. Their first child, Scott, born in 1959, died from sudden infant death syndrome just two and a half months after his birth. Redford and Lola divorced in 1985 after 27 years of marriage. David died in 2020 of cancer of the bile ducts.
In 2002, Redford was recognized with an honorary Oscar for his lifelong impact on the film industry.
A passionate advocate for environmental causes, Redford used his platform to champion conservation and sustainability, strengthening his legacy not only as an artist but as a humanitarian.
He is survived by his second wife of 16 years, Sibylle Szaggars, and his daughters from his first marriage, Shauna and Amy. He is also remembered by generations of audiences who found inspiration in his artistry and dedication to both film and the world beyond it. His life and work will continue to inspire future storytellers, activists, and dreamers. ~Alexandra Heilbron
