The Office UK actress Lucy Davis has revealed she is living with incurable stage four breast cancer, a diagnosis she had kept private for more than a year.
Davis, 53, best known for playing receptionist Dawn Tinsley in the original British version of The Office, shared the news in an emotional Instagram post. She said she was diagnosed a year and a half ago and that the cancer has since spread to her bones, including her spine, right hip and ribs. At this stage, she said the disease is incurable, and it is too late for chemotherapy. Davis also revealed that the first sign was so subtle she nearly ignored it. Rather than finding a noticeable lump, she felt a tiny "hard spot" and almost decided not to have it examined, prompting her to urge others not to ignore unusual changes in their bodies.
Despite the seriousness of her diagnosis, Davis said she is focused on enjoying whatever time she has ahead. The cancer has made standing and walking for extended periods difficult, and she sometimes needs a wheelchair, but she has relied heavily on humor and has asked friends and family not to treat her like a "sick person." She said she is at peace with what may come next and plans to continue acting, which she described as one of the biggest joys of her life, as well as her work supporting animal rights.
Her father, comedian Jasper Carrott, has since spoken about the diagnosis, saying the family has supported Davis since learning she had cancer and thanking the public for the outpouring of love and concern. He said the family is "so proud" of Davis and praised the way she has handled not only her cancer diagnosis, but other serious health issues throughout her life.
Davis' diagnosis also marks a heartbreaking coincidence between the British and American versions of The Office: both actresses who played the show's receptionist have battled breast cancer. Davis played Dawn from 2001 to 2003, while Jenna Fischer played her American counterpart, Pam Beesly. Fischer revealed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with stage one triple-positive breast cancer after a routine mammogram led to further testing. Because it was caught before it spread, she underwent a lumpectomy, 12 rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and additional treatments and is now cancer-free.
Fischer's treatment is also behind the noticeably shorter hair she has sported in more recent appearances, including Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy. Her hair fell out unevenly during chemotherapy, and as it grew back, she went through several shorter styles, including a pixie cut and the curly texture that can follow chemotherapy.
After Davis revealed her diagnosis, Fischer was among the stars who immediately reached out. "Beautiful post. Love you lots," she wrote, adding her support for Davis' decision to continue acting while living with cancer. "And yes to working with cancer! Let's spread that message far and wide! How working is such a comfort!"
The connection is especially poignant given how closely both actresses remain associated with their respective Office characters. Dawn and Pam filled essentially the same role in the two versions of the comedy, and decades later, the actresses who brought them to life have found themselves connected by something far more serious. Fischer has spoken about how meaningful returning to acting became after wondering during treatment whether she would ever work again, while Davis is now expressing the same determination to continue doing the work she loves despite her incurable diagnosis.
