The stoner comedy The Wrong Girls is deliciously weird and offbeat. Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat play two best friends, Frankie and Molly, who can't afford to pay their bills or the rent. Despite that, they keep their spirits up by smoking weed nonstop.
When Frankie (Stewart) is mistaken for another girl who looks identical to her, she's given a locked case of bottles that she and Molly (Shawkat) determine to be drugs.
They decide to sell the bottles to pay their rent, but reason that they should try the drug first. The drug not only takes them on a journey, but they become telepathic with each other (and their cats) and eventually learn they're telekinetic -- a talent that comes in handy when they learn they're being chased by foreign men with guns.
The cast is stellar, with not only Kristen and Alia delivering outstanding performances -- they're supported by actors who match them step for step, including LaKeith Stanfield as the man who gives Frankie the suitcase by mistake and then needs to protect the girls; Kate McKinnon as the brilliant scientist Dr. Olsen; and Geena Davis as Stanford Department Head, Dr. Chapman.
Even the cats have hilarious lines, such as when Frankie and Molly need to escape and take the cats along with them. In confusion, when one cat wonders if their airhead owners are taking them to the vet, the other quips, "I promise you, they cannot afford the vet."
The action is nonstop -- even when they're not doing much, the girls are experiencing a lot thanks to the new liquid drug in combination with the weed they constantly smoke. It's a fun romp through the lives of two not-too-bright but extremely likable young women. ~Alexandra Heilbron
