Why Timothée Chalamet lost at the Academy Awards this year

Published By Alexandra Heilbron on Mar 18, 2026

Timothée Chalamet in Dune: Part TwoTimothée Chalamet may be Hollywood’s golden boy, but when it comes to the Oscars, he’s the prom king who somehow keeps going home without the crown.

From the moment he broke out in Call Me by Your Name, everyone basically stamped “Future Oscar Winner” on his forehead. He kept turning in prestige‑level performances, racking up multiple Best Actor nominations while still in his 20s, becoming the youngest man ever to hit three Best Actor nods.

Behind the scenes, awards voters say Chalamet doesn't come across as humble and gracious. He tells publicists many years his senior — who've been doing their jobs since before anyone heard of Chalamet — what to do. For recent campaigns, insiders described him as highly controlling about PR and messaging, wanting to shape interviews, photo ops, and how the narrative around his performance was sold. That might fly on TikTok, but some Oscar voters reportedly saw it as arrogant, like he was trying to manage the voters instead of charm them. Once that storyline starts — "he’s a bit full of himself" — it can spread fast in Academy circles, where personal vibes matter almost as much as what’s on screen.

On Rob Shuter's Naughty But Nice online platform, several Oscar voters sounded off about Chalamet, with one saying, "Timothée is incredibly talented," but "he’s very difficult."

Another called him "arrogant,” adding, "Being on set with him isn't a positive experience."

One insider claimed, "The more voters got to know him, the less they liked him. There’s no love lost for Timmy."

His performance in Marty Supreme was praised, but the buzz around him had curdled a bit due to his overexposure in films and media, questions about whether he was over-managing his image, and jokes about how badly he seemed to want an Oscar. Once an actor is seen as desperate for a win, some voters reportedly dig in their heels; nobody wants to feel like they’re being pushed into crowning someone.

So why hasn’t Timothée Chalamet won an Oscar? The nominations have been there, but until the industry's feelings about him soften, he may keep leaving Oscar night with jabs directed at him by the host… and no statue.

Chalamet can next be seen in Dune: Part Three when it hits theaters on December 18, 2026. ~Alexandra Heilbron

So why does he even get the nod for an Oscar. There must be a heck of a lot of people that do like his acting. Should be one way or the other.

He was horrible in Marty Supreme. Actually, I've never thought he was right for any role he's been given, although he does play a self-involved creep in Marty Supreme, so probably that was the only thing he's actually fit the role for. Personally, I've never been able to stand him and when he gave an acceptance speech when he did win something (not an Oscar), he was like, I want to be considered one of the greats. An awards ceremony is not the place to say that, it makes him look needy and like a wannabe. Ew.

I have no idea why he keeps getting nominated. There’s nothing special about him. He’s not good looking. There are a lot of actors more talented than him and more humble, Austin Butler and Glen Powell for example. Maybe now that he’s shown who he is they’ll stop nominating him and give the opportunity to someone who deserves it.

Timothee is young and experiencing the follies of youth. He needs to learn a lessons in humility & kindness. His reputation is as important as his talent. He is a brilliant actor that needs to work on developing interpersonal skills. He needs to create a legacy of kindness.

Why he even gets a nid at all is the real mystery. He has done nothing worthwhile, he lacks real talent and most of what he does are bad remakes of movies which were great with others who came before him. As for his "good looks", not even close. In fact, the only person I know that likes him that much is a senile 75-year old woman who hasn't dated in over 40 years.

He is ok but not in the caliber of great actors (Robert Dinero. Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, Robert Redford, DiCaprio, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman) heck he is not even among the best right now (Michael B. Jordan is wayyy better and so is Austin Butler). M. B. Jordan definitely deserved the best Oscar award way more than he did (even id he and his team campaigned so hard to get him that Oscar for Marty Supreme Stupidness)

I'm so glad the Hollywood Elite finally see him the way I do. His talent is overhyped, why he's had any Oscar nominations is puzzling to me. Nominate someone with talent next time.

I think if you are the best at acting then you deserve the award, no matter what your personality is. I don't think he was the best though.

If "personal vibes matter almost as much as what’s on screen" then Sean Penn wouldn't have won

Watch Tropic Thunder 2008 Ben Still and Robert Downey Jr. it explains the Sean Penn issue regarding the Oscars.

I think he was the best actor for his role in MARTY SUPREME. However, from what I learn on his arrogant and vane attitude, I'm glad he was ignored for the Oscar

I guess this explains why he’s courting a Kardashian and why she’s courting him… these personalities of being so self absorbed and devoid of any humble thought at such a young age makes those with incredible talent that have had to really struggle in this business and most for decades look at these vain creatures like “naw, you need to feel some humility”. What a shame. I remember meeting George Hamilton (when he was really big for a micro second) at a Nuriev ballet in 1973 in the aisle as he was walking in and asking him if he was a movie star (I was only 13) he frowned at me and said “I am an ACTOR!!” He refused to give me an autograph. But I got one even better that night! I got Nuriev’s autograph on the playbill! Worth so much more. Thanks George! Are you still trapped in your tanning bed?

Kate Lipton are you sure it was the "George Hamilton" in Nuriev's ballet?? I read it was "Ian Hamilton" in that particular ballet and it was spelled Nureyev. Unless you meant a different ballet. Either way if he did snub you it was his loss you got a better autograph in the end. Especially after the wonderful ballet dancer Nureyev died so young at 54.

@Berj Chalamet absolutely was not the best actor! Did u see Michael B. Jordan play the dual roles as brothers in Sinners. I had not known much about the movie before I saw it and had no idea it was the same actor playing hose brothers! His performance blew Chalamet out of the water in his neurotic role as Marty Supreme ( fun fact playing a neurotic character is actually the easiest character to do for any actor, if you personally know any actors ask them). Even Di Caprio's role in One Battle after another was better. He also played a neurotic character but more complex given he was a dad who would do anything to get his daughter back even when totally out of his depth.

A Bob Dylan song came on the radio last night while I was driving and I couldn't listen to it, I had to switch to something else. I was thinking why does Bob Dylan annoy me after all these years, he never did before. Then I realized it was after watching the Bob Dylan film that Chalamet starred in. He played Dylan as a real jerk, too. And now I'm trying to think, are there any roles that Chalamet has played where he's likeable? Other than Willy Wonka, can't think of one.

The only film I have seen that he played in was the one about Bob Dylan. I love Bob Dylan and I was amazed at the wonderful job he did of portraying him. When complimented for his wonderful ability, he humbly said, well, due to the pandemic, I had five years to study and practice being Bob Dylan. Such a shame that he wasn't rewarded for the accomplishment. While we are on the subject, I thought Leonardo DiCaprio should have won, if not Timoth'ee. Does no one recognize talent these days?
