Xavier Dolan's new movie called 'worst film at Cannes'

69th Cannes Film Festival - Just Fin Du Monde Photocall

Xavier Dolan is rolling with the punches after facing the infamous scorn of the Cannes Film Festival press corps.

His latest film, Juste la fin du monde (It's Only the End of the World), tells the story of a gay writer who learns he's dying of a terminal illness and returns to his home village, but keeps it a secret from his family and friends. The story is an adaption of the stage play by French playwright Jean-Luc Lagarce.

Dolan has called it his best film, and it boasts an impressive roster of French movie stars. Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, Vincent Cassel, Nathalie Baye and Gaspard Ulliel are all on board.

Critics have called It's Only the End of the World the worst film of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The close-up camera style was a recurring problem for many.

As for Dolan, he's doesn't seem to be losing sleep. “Well, we’re in Cannes … some films are warmly welcomed, other less so. I’m not particularly worried,” he said at a press conference.

It's Only the End of the World will likely screen at TIFF this fall. ~ Yanis Khamsi

Not surprised. His movies are crap.

And somehow he still won an award at the fest for the film? Suspicious.
