Michaela Coel was born in London, England. She is a British writer, actress, director, and producer known for her work in television and film. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before beginning her career in performance and writing.

Michaela first gained widespread recognition for creating, writing, and starring in the E4 comedy series Chewing Gum (2015–2017). Her performance earned her the BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance in 2016.

She later created, wrote, and starred in the critically acclaimed HBO/BBC One series I May Destroy You (2020), earning major awards including a Peabody Award, the BAFTA TV Award for Best Leading Actress, the BAFTA TV Award for Best Mini-Series, and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series.

Michaela has also appeared in films and other television projects, including the role of Aneka in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), The Christophers (2025) alongside Ian Kellner, and the A24 film Mother Mary (2026) co-starring with Anne Hathaway.
