Reading the World
In 1963, Paulo Freire led an experimental project in northeastern Brazil that taught hundreds of rural adults to read, write, and vote. Told through the memories of its participants and rare archival footage, the film follows the project’s democratic education model and its disruption by the 1964 coup, which forced Freire into exile.
